One big project at PowellsWood this year has been the renovation of the plantings at the pond. Still Waters Aquatic Nursery of Mount Vernon worked with PowellsWood staff to thin the old plantings that were taking over the surface area of the pond, and replace them with new, less vigorous plantings. A Kingfisher was recently spotted at the pond munching on goldfish, so he seems to approve!
Meanwhile, Still Waters is also working on a water clarification project at the retention pond at Village Green Retirement Campus in Federal Way, another property owned by the Powells. At that pond, Still Waters has installed bottom air diffusers, which circulate the water from the bottom up, along with “floating islands,” essentially rafts planted with plants considered good at filtering. This project is a great environmental approach to help control algae naturally, while looking beautiful too! This entry was posted on 09/05/2011 in Northwest Gardening Blog by PowellsWood
