We learned some great things about the Sustainable Sites Initiative at the American Public Garden Association’s annual trade conference in Philadelphia a couple weeks ago. PowellsWood is a proud supporter of the home-gardening Landscape for Life approach to those goals.

What a great time we had at the garden for National Public Gardens Day May 6, and our annual Mother’s Day Weekend celebration May 7 & 8. It seems that visitors always have a great time, too… so great that they lose track of things that they’ve brought with them! If you lost something while visiting on Mother’s Day, email us (admin at powellswood.org) or give us a call (253-529-1620) and let us know what you’re missing. We’ve probably got it!
Your NPGD passes for PowellsWood will be honored throughout the summer. Dozens of people managed to brave the drizzle (and even outright downpours!) to join us at PowellsWood for National Public Gardens Day on Friday. We know that the weather was just too great an obstacle for many, many others. And I personally understand that! I was at the garden for six hours that day, bundled in my hoodie and rain parka, and I was still cold come Saturday morning! So for all those still holding free NPGD passes for PowellsWood from Better Homes and Gardens, bring them on down any time this summer. They’re still good with us… even though they don’t technically carry an “act of God” guarantee.
Tyee Photography Alliance will be hosting a booth at PowellsWood this weekend as part of our Mother’s Day Open. Hours are 10 AM to 5 PM both Saturday and Sunday. Four photographers–PowellsWood’s own Jennifer Leone, Michael Brunk (presenting at 11 AM Saturday), Brian Morris, and Bryan Nelson–are the founding members of the Alliance, whose purpose is “serving the greater Federal Way, Kent, Des Moines, Burien, SeaTac, and Renton communities with event photography, photojournalism, art prints, and adventure photography.” Their both will display the work of all four photographers, and will offer several pieces and prints for sale. Stop by and see the garden, and check out Tyee Photography! Click here for the complete schedule of events for Mother’s Day Weekend…

Join us for some live Bluegrass at PowellsWood on Mother’s Day, Sunday May 8! We are proud to announce that WB and Bonnie will performing live from noon to 2 PM. This husband and wife duo present a wide range of musical traditions: old-time country songs and fiddle tunes, string blues music from Mississippi and Memphis, and Mexican songs and dance tunes. Both play fiddle and guitar, and WB also plays a variety of other stringed instruments. Sweet harmonies on songs ranging from poignient to humorous, twin-fiddling, foot-tapping tunes and slow waltzes, all make for fine and enjoyable music. As part of PowellsWood’s Mother’s Day Weekend celebration, Jeanette Brizendine, City of Federal Way Recycling Project Manager, will be speaking on “Composting with Worms” at 1 PM on Sunday, May 8. As the Solid Waste and Recycling Project Manager for the City of Federal Way, Jeanette is the environmental “everything to everyone.” She provides outreach on waste reduction, recycling, composting and hazardous waste to the single-family residents, multi-family residents, businesses, visitors and employees of the City through creative avenues. Jeanette holds two degrees from Western Washington University: a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry and Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics. Although she found her education interesting, it could not compete with her life-long love of recycling and resource conservation which drew her to her current position. Since we don’t use chemical products at PowellsWood, we are always looking for natural ways to keep on top of the weed population. Since we have lots of shade at PowellsWood, we look for groundcovers that can tolerate shade. We also want groundcovers that don’t become too aggressive and thus create more work for us.
